Bremen for women
Bremen from a 'female perspective' – our tips for a short break with your girlfriends
Women who love a mix of culture, shopping and relaxation will feel right at home in Bremen. It is a wonderful destination for a weekend away with your girlfriends: you can enjoy Bremen's rich cultural scene with theatres, museums and concert halls dotted all over the city, a multitude of enticing shopping arcades and boulevards, delightful Böttcherstrasse with its beautiful brick-built buildings, and the luxurious Badehaus spa with its Moorish stylings. There are so many attractions that turn a visit into a real experience.
Strolling, shopping, sightseeing. A sheer delight in Bremen! And you can easily combine your shopping trip with other fun activities. For example, you could visit an exhibition first, have a bite to eat and then hit the shops afterwards! There is plenty of time to do it all because the city centre is so compact – yet it still has countless boutiques, fashion shops, department stores, restaurants and cultural attractions. Glass-covered arcades, historical squares, trendy themes, great offers, lots of lovely things to eat and interesting sights await you at every turn.
A life "like a Hollywood film", said German art critic Bülent Gündüz: it is the story of a young woman who dreams of becoming an artist, overcomes barriers, marries a famous painter, feels trapped in her marriage and in her conventional role as a wife, keeps breaking away and flees to decadent Paris, has a child and dies young. The life and work of Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907), Bremen's star painter, encompass much more than her characteristic landscape pictures of birch trees and peat moorland.
Modersohn-Becker is gradually being recognised as a pioneer of modern art. Her masterpieces are on permanent display at the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum on Böttcherstrasse. It was the first museum in the world to be devoted to the works of a female painter. The Worpswede artists' colony, which played a central role in Paula Modersohn-Becker's artistic development, is not far from Bremen, and is as fascinating today as it ever was for painters and tourists alike.
Aromatherapy, Ayurvedic treatments and full-body massages: the wellness programme at the Badehaus ensures that you'll feel pampered from head to toe. The spa combines contemporary surroundings with ancient bathing traditions. Enjoy the gentle, warming effects of a Turkish bath – at the heart of Bremen. And Mondays is ladies only. 'Oase' at Weserpark has an amazing range of sauna, fitness and wellness facilities. It is Europe's largest sauna complex and offers massages, spa treatments from all over the world, fitness and so much more. At the Park Hotel, you can relax body and mind in a luxurious setting. Our wellness packages even take all the stress out of planning your trip.
Fresh air, warm evenings, cultural delights for all the senses? Open-air entertainment is a tradition in Bremen. Every year, the Bremen Shakespeare Company performs classics such as Macbeth and A Midsummer Night's Dream in the Bürgerpark under open skies. Another popular favourite is the Summer in Lesmona festival, a classical open-air concert in Knoops Park in the north of Bremen. A picnic and glorious views are part of the experience!
The regional website for women 'Frauenseiten Bremen' provides information on entertainment, culture and many other topics of interest. It has a search function to help you find everything from exhibitions to workshops in the Bremen events calendar. And all from a female perspective!
