17 Oct to 2 Nov 2014, Bürgerweide and city centre
Never say Bremen doesn’t know how to throw a party. In autumn, the 979 year old Freimarkt and the idea of letting the good times role are almost inseparable.
The civic festival plunges the entire city centre into seventeen raving days of open-ended fun and excitement, thrilling the crowd into the early hours. One of Germany’s oldest and third largest folk festival regularly draws over four million people to the Bürgerweide, just minutes from the historic city centre.
The fairground features over 320 attractions in an area covering 100,000 square metres; no other German city boasts as many modern spins and rides. ‘Ischa Freimaak’ – local dialect for ‘It’s the Freimarkt’ – is the traditional open sesame to all the fun and congeniality.
Halfway through the event, festival fun takes on a lively carnival theme with over 200,000 people lining the streets for a colourful parade of floats.
To those looking for less adrenalin-charged entertainment, the sparkle comes from Little Freimarkt in Market Square where nostalgic stall trading is a feast for the senses amid tasty fried pastry, roasted almonds and aromatic liquorice sweets.
