Friedensreich Hundertwasser: Against the grain
20 October 2012 – 17 February 2013
Friedensreich Hundertwasser is one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, but he is also often misunderstood or underrated. From 20 October 2012 to 17 February 2013, the exhibition 'Friedensreich Hundertwasser: Against the Grain. Works from 1949-1970' in Kunsthalle Bremen will put the spotlight on the artist's early output and signature works. On display will be a fantastic selection of Hundertwasser masterpieces, including lesser-known pictures on loan from museums and collections in Europe, America and Japan.
The exhibition, which presents Hundertwasser as an influential member of the international avant garde, offers new perspectives on an oeuvre that seems more relevant than ever today. Hundertwasser's radical political views and pioneering role as an ecological activist are documented by his performances and manifestos from these years and they find expression in his works on canvas. The Hundertwasser display will be the Kunsthalle's first major exhibition under new director Dr Christoph Grunenberg: "I am both delighted and honoured to be the new director of Kunsthalle Bremen, one of the finest museums in Germany with its important and wide-ranging collection."
