Old pumping station
An architectural monument that documents the history of waste water disposal. An exhibition of sewage and disease, of hygiene and engineering.
The old pumping station is a disused wastewater pumping works that was in operation from 1915 to 1994. Now a heritage-listed monument to industrial history, it is run as a museum and events centre by an association that was awarded the Bremen monument preservation prize in 2010, in recognition of its longstanding voluntary work to preserve and develop the site.
You can view the machine room and an exhibition about the history of wastewater technology, then descend into a sewer to experience the 'underworld' – an opportunity unlike any other in Germany.
The old pumping station also regularly hosts concerts and readings, performed by students from Bremen University of the Arts among others.
