Symbol of peace: a Buddha for Europe
The Japanese Garden at botanika has a new attraction: the European Peace Buddha. As part of an initiative by the Dalai Lama, every continent is going to receive a Peace Buddha. The first one, in Asia, was dedicated by the Dalai Lama in Jayanti Park, New Delhi, in 1993. Since August 2017, the second Peace Buddha has been located at botanika in Bremen.
The gilded bronze statue is intended to serve as a symbol of peace for everyone rather than as a place of worship. Each Peace Buddha should be protected by a roof. In Europe – for the time being – it is that of the greenhouse which contains the Japanese Garden at botanika. The plan is to construct a separate building for the Peace Buddha, which will be adjacent to the Japanese Garden, at a later point.
