Icons: Worship and Adoration
19 October 2019 - 1 March 2020
With the spectacular exhibition Icons: Worship and Adoration, the Kunsthalle Bremen is celebrating a premiere:
For the first time, an exhibition will take place in the entire museum and all the galleries. The show will examine how the concept of the icon unites aspects of the sacred, worship and the idea of transcendence. The qualities of traditional icons continue to live on in the spiritual presence and auratic power of many modern and contemporary works of art.
The show will present a single masterpiece in each of the museum's galleries that expresses, each in its own way, aspects of spirituality and devotion - from the Russian icon to works by Caspar David Friedrich, Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, Mark Rothko, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol, Niki de Saint Phalle, Isa Genzken and Andreas Gursky. "Everyday icons" - from popular culture to consumers brands - will complement the selection. An interpretation of the traditional notion of the iconic in art will thereby be contrasted with the proliferation of icons in everyday life and the media - from iconic architecture to iconic pop stars. Visitors have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the varied and impressive architecture of the Kunsthalle Bremen in a tour of 60 galleries and directly experience the spiritual power of a wide range of outstanding works of art. The exceptional encounter transforms the museum itself into a place of reflection and contemplation.
During the Icons exhibition, the Kunsthalle Bremen collection will go on tour. From 25 October 2019 to 16 February 2020, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao will be presenting a selection of French and German masterpieces from Bremen. For that reason, the collection will be on display at the Kunsthalle only through the beginning of August 2019.
