KulturAmbulanz Bremen - Hospital Museum
Permanent and special exhibitions on the history of medicine and psychiatry. Set in the grounds of a listed park.
The KulturAmbulanz comprises the Hospital Museum with a permanent exhibition on psychiatric history in Bremen, the House in the Park (music, theatre and events venue) and the Gallery in the Park, which hosts temporary exhibitions. The KulturAmbulanz has been the cultural centre for the Osterholz district for 25 years.
The Hospital Museum is a surprising place to visit.
The exhibition rooms are located in a heritage-listed building, once part of the old psychiatric institute, and set amid a historical park. The permanent exhibition presents the history of psychiatry in Bremen from its beginnings right up until the 20th century.
What is madness? How do we deal with illness? The exhibition gets straight to the heart of questions such as these. Medical instruments from bygone days provide a fascinating insight into earlier forms of therapy and treatment, and interactive installations and audio stations recount the stories of patients, doctors, nurses and their families.
There is also a separate section dedicated to psychiatry during the Third Reich.
