Discover nature and fun parks in the beautiful Lüneburg Heath.
Because the Lüneburg Heath is flat it's ideal for cycling or walking tours, particularly for families and the not-so-fit. It boasts more than 2,000 kilometres of cycle paths that criss-cross lush riverbank meadows, charming heathland and tranquil forests. Depending on time, fitness and tastes, there's a tour for everyone here. The car-free conservation area around Wilseder Berg is a particularly good place to enjoy nature and the fresh heathland air.
Boasting more than ten adventure parks, wildlife parks and zoos, Lüneburg Heath is one of Europe's top destinations for days out. You can see white lions, giraffes and rhinos at Serengeti Park, for example, or enjoy white-knuckle thrills at Heide Park Resort, home to the world's fastest and tallest wooden rollercoaster, the world's biggest gyro drop tower and Germany's first 'dive coaster'. Tropical birds will fly right over your heads at Vogelpark Walsrode, while at the Snow Dome Bispingen you can try out your skiing legs.
The best time of year to take a trip to the heath has to be late summer, when the heather flowers, revealing a purple blaze of colour. The Nordheide (north heath) nature park is the closest to Bremen. Primitive nature, vast expanses carpeted with heather and juniper, dotted with large forests of deciduous trees and pines. Carriage rides through the Wilsede Hill are a popular pastime, and don't forget to look out for the woolly Heathland sheep, which roam the countryside in their flocks.
