Experience the maritime side of Bremen with old captains’ houses, a museum harbour, shipyards and a host of hands-on attractions.
In Vegesack, about 20 kilometres from the centre of Bremen, the history of seafaring and shipbuilding is alive and well. Pride of place goes to the 'Maritime Mile' along the river Weser. At 1,852 metres, it is exactly the length of a nautical mile, offering a host of historical locations, quaint spots and interesting attractions. Many of the sites, such as the Utkiek whale jaw, are reminders of Vegesack's history as a shipyard and fishing port.
Utkiek and the municipal gardens
Historical buildings such as the Havenhaus, which dates back over 300 years, and other restaurants at 'Utkiek' offer maritime delicacies that tie in with the theme of 'culture and pleasure along the river'.
The municipal gardens at Vegesack boast many exotic plants from all over the world – the perfect spot to relax and feast your eyes on the beautiful surroundings.
For accommodation that's a bit out of the ordinary, look no further than the training ship Deutschland, a tall ship moored at the mouth of the Lesum river. Your chance to feel like a proper sailor in cabins that are available all year round.
The museum harbour with its lovingly restored vintage ships and historical warehouses is another highlight of the Maritime Mile. A range of riverboat tours are available from Vegesack, for example to Worpswede and Oldenburg, and there is also a ferry service to the centre of Bremen. Or why not book your own personal charter cruise on a traditional cutter from Vegesack's museum harbour?
Events such as the Maritime Festival, the Vegesack Harbour Festival and the Lugger Market emphasise the nautical feel of Vegesack's Maritime Mile.
The main event on the Maritime Mile is the Maritime Festival. Featuring international stars from the world of maritime music in over 150 concerts, this spectacular open-air event is unrivalled in Germany. Rock, folk, sea shanties and classical music: rugged sea dogs and full-voiced choirs from across Europe provide that certain wistful touch but will also get even the most reluctant dancers up onto their feet. A lively, interactive programme of activities featuring exhibitions, pirate shows, cutter rowing, a fireworks display and a large fun and activities area for all the family, along with a wide range of food and drink, complement the musical part of this event.
The Vegesack Harbour Festival transforms the Maritime Mile around the museum harbour into a bustle of fun and excitement, with music, nautical attractions and a great atmosphere.
At the Lugger Market, stalls along the Maritime Mile offer a huge variety of goods.
