Musicians in miniature
Versions of the Bremen Town Musicians come in all shapes and sizes. Many visitors are surprised by the scale of the sculpture at the town hall, but prepare to be amazed by the version produced at Bremen University, which takes the definition of small to a new level. With the naked eye, you can just about make out a dot. Only with a microscope can you see the animal pyramid – which is no taller than a strand of hair is thick.
The picture is produced by a complex procedure in which a laser beam acts like a pencil, etching the design on a light-sensitive surface – a technique with applications in many fields, including the manufacture of cameras and display screens, and the development of new materials and manufacturing processes.
