Speicher XI Dockland Museum
From international port to urban regeneration – the 120-year history of Bremen’s port presented interactively in an old cotton warehouse.
The tour through the past 120 years of the port of Bremen presents biographies and exhibits which show the straightening of the Weser, the building of the docks and the customs union to have been the foundations of its heyday. The section 'Working hand-in-hand' introduces visitors to the different jobs in the port and the world of transhipment, while the 'Romance of seafaring' section shows the development of freight ships since 1945 using a variety of models.
Romantic notions of seafaring are then contrasted with the harsh reality of life and work on board ship. An underfloor model helps visitors to trace the development of Bremen's docks right up to the present day, before ending their tour with the future of the docklands in the Überseestadt information centre.
